Requirements for travelling to Iran with pets

If you want to visit Iran with your pet, make sure you follow the country’s pet import policy. It is important to familiarize yourself with the current rules well before you set off on your journey. The Ministry of Agriculture of Iran establishes veterinary rules to prevent the spread of contagious diseases within the country, so if your pet does not meet the requirements it may be denied entry.

To enter Iran with a pet, you will have to consider the following requirements:

Your pet must have an ISO 11784/11785 microchip for its identification. If your pet’s microchip does not comply with the standard, be ready to provide your own microchip reader;

All pets must be vaccinated against rabies. The records on this and other important vaccinations must be included in the health certificate of the pet;

You have to obtain a health certificate from an authorized veterinarian in your country. The certificate must include information about the pet, its health condition and vaccinations, as well as contacts of the pet owner;

You will also need an import permit obtained from the veterinary authorities of Iran;

People travelling to Iran with pets must enter the country via Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport.

Always carefully check the possibility of taking pets in the transport you use to travel to Iran, to the hotel where you are going to stay, and to the places you are going to visit. Not all companies and institutions accept pets.

Remember to check IATA Live Animals Regulations that control pet transportation by air, as well as the requirements of the airline you choose. For further information, you can visit the “Airlines Pet Policy” section on our website.
